School dropouts are becoming more commonplace in Generation Z. An easily acceptable reason could be that of incompetence. This is simply not the case. The problems facing the Generation Z are more self inflicted or by cause of their millennial parents. Entitlement is a problem with millennials and has been passed on to Generation Z. Another problem facing Generation Z is that of less stable career aspiration. Last of all, and the most influential reason, Generation Z is prone to fall for the addiction to instant gratification. These social influences and personal qualities are irrefutable reasons of school dropouts.
Let us begin to take a look at entitlement. This quality was terrible in millennials but seems to be even worse in Generation Z. They think of themselves as superior to everyone around them. This has the potential to make them feel as if education is beneath them. Entitlement also sprouts the belief that is better to have the government pay for their welfare after applying for money because of the lack of having a job. This belief is true, in the sense that the government will give them money, but the problem is the harm this causes to the economy. If the government does not help them enough, Generation Z expects others to pick up the slack of the government. This is a leading cause of older generations viewing Generation Z as entitled brats.
The current model of a career path is altering dramatically as Generation Z begins to care less about a stable career. Some individual’s root cause of this trend could be the realization that all things are temporary. In other words, in five hundred years from now, whatever I do now will not matter. Laziness, though easily mistaken for a belief of everything being temporary, is a problem all its own. It is very painful to watch someone who has great ability, whether in school or pursuing a job, allow laziness to cause that person to stop trying. This quality is becoming more evident in Generation Z. The final reason, and arguably the most common, is that Generation Z is more entrepreneurial. This means the preferred job is that which allows for a greater amount of flexibility. Generation Z is turning away from hourly jobs, potentially causing huge changes to our economic structure.
All of these drives are influential and undeniable, but they can’t hold a candle to the addiction to instant gratification. This addiction has become evident in Generation Z as social media is sweeping the world. This gives rise to the problem of school being part of a long term goal. Generation Z does not see the importance of becoming educated. They think that maintaining a job through high school would be better as they put money in their pockets, this, of course, meaning, they put money in their pockets NOW. The addiction to instant gratification only continues to influence dropouts as the simple dislike of learning becomes a reason of dropping out of school. This generation turns from school to social media to satisfy their need for instant gratification. Social media, as stated, has overtaken communication on an unfathomable scale and caused this addiction. Social media remains the easiest way to satisfy the need of instant gratification.
School dropouts are increasing. The economy could very well be straining under the pressure of the entitled Generation Z. The problems of entitlement, lack of care for a stable career, and the addiction to instant gratification have been causing an alarming number of school dropouts. All of the problems being presented from these have extreme potential to cause global harm. This makes me wonder what the real threat to humans is. Will the ice caps melt from global warming? Will the ice age resulting from this kill us all? I am beginning to think Generation Z will beat these disasters to the punch.
