With September 22nd being the first official day of fall, many people are excited for the season that lies ahead. Many wonderful things occur during the fall. From days spent playing in large piles of leaves, from nights spent with families, watching the NFL Thursday Night Football games. Kitchens begin to fill with the warming, welcoming aroma of delightful desserts, pumpkin or apple pies, oatmeal cookies, caramel apples, apple walnut cheesecake, baked apples, fall is the king of delicious desserts.
Another wonderful thing about fall is the photography opportunities. The climate here in the Northwest makes for perfect fall colors. Many of our deciduous trees leaves change to beautiful hues. Fog creeps into pastures and fields, making a wonderfully eerie photo. Dawn gives way to black trees outlined against a gray early sky. Ripe apples fall from the branches. Fresh fall rain leaves the earth feeling refreshed. The wind blows circlets of leaves from hither to thither, and dried, yellowed grass whispers in the breeze.
Fall also brings plentiful harvests to those who planted in the early spring and summer. It is the most wonderful feeling to walk into your garden and watch how the crops have grown from week to week, but in the fall you actually get to pick and taste the vegetables you have worked so hard to grow. Fresh ears of corn, orange pumpkins, bushes of beans, heads of broccoli and cauliflower, organic carrots and potatoes, all fresh. In my family, fall means canning and pressure cooking the veggies.
Don’t lie dear reader, you’re excited for fall because of the joyous holidays, Thanksgiving and Halloween. You are ready to feast with your families. Turkey. Stuffing. Vegetables. Various family discussions over dinner. You are ready to see the streets lined with tricker treaters, ready to hand out candy or go to an awesome, spooky party. Fall has great holidays to celebrate.
So get excited for fall! Grab a pumpkin spice latte at Latte Da, put on your sweater, and watch the leaves blow about in the breeze, because fall is here and it is going to be a good season.
